PhotoSYNTH Lessons

Fun Music & Expression Activities for the Classroom

😀 😢 😮 😡 🤩 😌 🥳 😍

Make music with your face! These simple, fun lesson plans use the PhotoSYNTH to help students aged 9-16 discover the joy of making music through facial expressions and movement.

What is PhotoSYNTH?

PhotoSYNTH is a "magic mirror" that turns your facial expressions and movements into music. Smile and you hear sounds! Move around and the music changes. It's a musical instrument that plays you!

Try PhotoSYNTH Now!

Getting Started

Before You Begin

  1. Go to photosynth.app in a web browser (Chrome works best)
  2. Allow camera access when asked - this is how PhotoSYNTH sees your expressions!
  3. Position yourself so your face is clearly visible in the mirror
  4. Make faces and move around to hear how different expressions create different sounds!

The Expression Gallery

All the Faces You Can Make!

Lesson 1: Express Yourself!

Duration: 20-30 minutes | Ages: 9-12

Learning Objectives
  • Explore how different facial expressions create different sounds
  • Understand that music can be made without instruments
  • Build confidence in making music
What You Need
  • Computer/tablet with camera and web browser
  • Projector (optional, for demonstration)
  • Speakers
Activity Steps
  1. Demonstrate (5 min): Show the class how your face makes music. Make happy, sad, surprised faces and let them hear the differences!
  2. Explore (10 min): In pairs, students take turns making different faces while their partner observes what sounds they create.
  3. Create (10 min): Each student creates a "face symphony" - a sequence of 3 different expressions that tell a mini musical story.
  4. Share (5 min): Volunteers show their symphonies to the class!
Try These Faces!
😀 😢 😮 😡

Happy = Bright | Sad = Soft | Surprised = Sharp | Angry = Loud

Teacher Tip: Some students may feel self-conscious making faces. Remind them that in PhotoSYNTH, there's no "wrong" way to make music - every expression creates something unique!

Lesson 2: Expression Orchestra

Duration: 30-40 minutes | Ages: 10-14

Learning Objectives
  • Work collaboratively to create group music
  • Learn about musical dynamics (loud/soft, fast/slow)
  • Practice taking turns and listening to others
What You Need
  • One computer with PhotoSYNTH projected on screen
  • Or several tablets/laptops for groups
Activity Steps
  1. Warm-up (5 min): Whole class practices making sounds together - all happy, all sad, then "freestyle"!
  2. Assign Expressions (5 min): Divide class into 4 groups: Happy, Sad, Surprised, Angry. Each group practices their expression.
  3. Conduct! (10 min): You be the conductor! Point to different groups to make their sounds. Create a class composition!
  4. Group Work (15 min): In smaller groups, students create their own "orchestra piece" deciding who plays when.
  5. Perform (5 min): Groups perform for each other.
Orchestra Roles
🤩 😡 😌 😎
  • 🤩 Lead: Start the piece!
  • 😡 Drama: Add emphasis!
  • 😌 Bridge: Smooth transitions!
  • 😎 Cool: End with style!
Teacher Tip: This lesson works great as a continuous activity over several sessions where groups refine their pieces!

Lesson 3: Emotion Stories

Duration: 45 minutes | Ages: 11-16

Learning Objectives
  • Express emotions through music and facial expressions
  • Understand how music conveys mood and feeling
  • Create a narrative using only sounds and expressions
What You Need
  • Computers/tablets with PhotoSYNTH
  • Paper for story planning
Activity Steps
  1. Introduction (5 min): Discuss: How does music make you feel? Can a song sound happy or sad?
  2. Story Planning (10 min): In pairs, students plan a short story with 3-4 emotional beats (e.g., "waking up happy" → "getting lost" → "finding friends" → "celebrating")
  3. Practice (15 min): Pairs practice telling their story using only facial expressions and sounds on PhotoSYNTH.
  4. Perform (15 min): Each pair performs their emotion story while the class guesses the narrative!
Extension for Older Students

Try adding movement! PhotoSYNTH responds to head tilts and distance from the camera too. Can they make the music "zoom" or "spin"?

Story Emotions
😀 😢 😮 😡 🤩

Mix emotions to tell rich stories!

Lesson 4: Dance & Move!

Duration: 20-30 minutes | Ages: 9-16

Learning Objectives
  • Discover how movement affects sound
  • Connect physical activity with musical creation

  • Projector helpful (to see the mirror)
Activity Steps
  1. Demo (5 min): Show how moving closer/further, tilting head, and raising/lowering hands changes the sound.
  2. Movement Warm-up (5 min): Students stand and experiment - what happens when you lean left? Right? Stand on tiptoes?
  3. Movement Game (10 min): "Freeze Dance" style! Music plays (from PhotoSYNTH), students dance. When music stops, they freeze!
  4. Create Moves (10 min): Pairs create a "movement phrase" - a sequence of 3-4 movements that make different sounds.
Movement Sound Ideas
  • Closer to camera = Louder, brighter sounds
  • Further from camera = Softer, gentler sounds
  • Tilt head left/right = Change pitch
